I know you can do this

👋🏼 Hey Reader,

I hope you’re finding ways to enjoy your summer! I’m getting ready for the Winnipeg Folkfest. It’s something I do every year - 18 of the last 52 anyway! Despite the rising temperatures, my excitement isn’t dampened because these are the four days in July that I wait for all year. It’s a time for me to be surrounded by like-minded people who all want the world to be a little softer and kinder. It’s a place where I get to celebrate people and the power of community accompanied by a soundtrack.

Before heading out, I know the pressure of tying up loose ends at work can be overwhelming. When I was stuck in a job I didn’t love, it was even worse. The Sunday scaries were real, and the last thing I wanted was to worry about work while I was away. It took so much time away from my being away when I was stuck ruminating in all the things I forgot to do or had waiting for me upon my return.

Being resilient is when we can navigate life’s challenges with ease, adapt to change, and let things go maintaining a positive and proactive outlook. It's about our ability to be present and being present in the moment is like a cold glass of ice water on a scorching hot day. Resiliency is also a skill that can be developed. Learning to let go of work and be mentally on your holiday is more important than just stepping way from the office.

I want to help you tackle your work this week so you can fully enjoy your time off. Here are four super simple tasks to help you feel like a rock star:

  1. Set expectations - and boundaries: Do this well before hand by letting people know that you’re taking time away - which means away from email and DM’s.(I already hear your resistance, but I want you to experiment with this one. Give it a real try and see if your team really can’t get on without you!)
  2. Buffer: Book a buffer of time before you leave AND when you return with no meetings, so you can focus on catching up and getting things done.
  3. Quick Wins: Tackle a few small, easy-to-finish tasks. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and clear your to-do list a bit before you leave.
  4. Eat the Frog: Don’t leave all the stuff you really don’t like to do for when you get back. Swallow a few frogs so you’re not dreading the tasks when you get back. Make it easy for your future self.

(BTW- just pick one, you don't have to do them all!)

Planning, problem-solving, and reflection are all part of practicing resilience so try to look at this like an experiment and let me know how it goes.

Reply back if you need accountability or support (starting Tuesday, of course!) —I’m here to help!

In the mean time, follow me on LinkedIn and Instagram and check out my blogs page on my website for more great stuff.

Sending positive vibes your way,

Louise

PS - Let me know how your experiment goes - remember experiments never fail - they just prove or disprove a hypothesis. It’s all just data! :)

PSS - Here's a little something special for you as you plan to step away and disconnect.

👋🏼 Hey Reader, I just got back from my time at FolkFest and holy smokes was it fun. It was an opportunity for me to step away from work for a bit without having to worry about what's waiting for me back at the office. I had a chance to really fill my boots. But I noticed that not everyone there was there to disconnect and enjoy their time. Stepping away from work can be challenging. Often, the overwhelm we feel is because we haven't set ourselves up for success. So here's my trick: Buffer...

👋🏼 Hello Reader, Last week, I had the joy of spending quality time with my family as we celebrated my kiddo's transition from high school to university. It’s such an exciting time for us. Throughout the week, we encountered some pretty intense moments. Instead of trying to control everything or force outcomes, I asked a lot of questions, particularly, "What do you need right now that would make things a little easier?" This approach was invaluable, helping both overwhelmed grandparents and...

Hey Reader, Did you know my first job was yard maintenance? Oh yes. For several summers, my best friend and I went around town painting fences, weeding gardens, and cutting grass. We had A LOT of fun! A lot has changed since then, and I could not be happier with what I do now. I have just as much passion for career development since starting my coaching and consulting business in 2018. It’s truly amazing that I get to connect with folks across the globe to equip them with the tools and...
